A bird’s eye view of the garden

The views from Bodnant Garden’s giant trees must be some of the best in Wales…well you can see for yourself next weekend, with a rare chance to climb one and then zip-wire down again!

We are staging a full weekend of tremendous tree activities on Saturday and Sunday, August 3-4.

Visitors can climb a tree hundreds of years old and take in the views across this world famous garden and beyond to the Snowdonia mountain range. There will also be demonstrations of tree felling and tree climbing by the garden’s own arborists and tree carving sessions with visiting craftsfolk.

The weekend is part of BodnantGarden’s Grow Wild summer events programme for families. Gardener Katie Croft says: “BodnantGarden has some fantastic trees. For the first time we’re giving visitors a chance not just to admire them but to get right up inside; see what it’s like inside the canopy, look for wildlife, take in the incredible views…then whizz down on a zip-wire!”

Climbing sessions will be run by experts from The Big Tree Climb Co on the hour from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday in the Old Park. The event costs £12.50 and booking is required, on 01492 650460.

There are plenty of other free activities around the garden over the weekend too. On Saturday our own intrepid arborists will be demonstrating tree felling and on Sunday they will be demonstrating their tree climbing techniques, from 11am to 3pm.

On both days there will also be wood carving going on all day from the Woodcraft Project of the Blacon Estate near Chester. If all that activity gets too much there will be a chance to chill out with story telling in the Pin Mill on Saturday at 2.30pm.

As part of Grow Wild there are free events in the garden every afternoon: Mondays are Garden Apprentice days; Tuesday is Pond Dipping; Wednesdays is Grow Your Own Dinner at our veg plot plus an Evening Nature Trail in the Dell; on Thursdays explore a private area of the garden in Secret Bodnant and on Fridays there are Garden Games on the lawns.

For Grow Wild weekends, Bodnant Garden will be at Eglwysbach Show on August 10 and there’s also a Mega Machinery weekend at the garden on August 17-18 when visitors can try out all the kit gardeners use. This should appeal to parents and grandparents as well as the kids!
